Ritual Magic: How Does It Work, and What Can You Expect?

Imagine someone offering to make you rich by burning a green candle sprinkled with cinnamon. No business plan, no hard work, no investment. Just a candle and a little patience.

Having spent many years running businesses, I must admit I find this proposition rather attractive.

Unfortunately, magic is a little more complicated.

I genuinely believe in ritual magic and use it in my own spiritual practice. But I also believe that understanding what we are trying to achieve, which forces we are working with and what we can realistically expect is essential.

What Happens During a Magical Ritual?

Ritual magic involves a deliberate sequence of actions intended to influence energetic conditions and the development of events.

Different traditions approach this in different ways. Some work primarily with natural elements and their correspondences, others use symbols, prayers, invocations, runes or particular spiritual forces.

I study and use several traditions, including elemental magic, candle work and Northern spiritual practices.

The materials are selected according to their traditional properties and the purpose of the ritual. Fire may be used for transformation, water for cleansing, herbs for their specific magical correspondences, and runes to express and direct particular intentions.

Timing is important, too. Lunar phases, seasonal transitions and other significant dates have long played a role in magical traditions. For example, a period associated with release and completion may be more suitable for cleansing, while another may be chosen for attracting new opportunities.

I enjoy the practical side of ritual work enormously, especially creating candles from natural beeswax, selecting herbs and stones, and constructing a ritual in which every element has a particular purpose.

But there is something more important than the ingredients: understanding exactly what we are trying to accomplish.

Why I Start With an Assessment

Let’s take a fairly common request: “I want more money.”

Where exactly do you expect that money to come from? Are you running a business that isn’t attracting enough customers? Looking for a better-paid job? Trying to sell a property? Or earning quite well but somehow spending everything you make?

These are completely different situations.

In the spiritual approach I follow, money is understood as the consequence of other processes: the expression of our abilities, our decisions, our actions and the opportunities available to us.

I would therefore investigate the circumstances before suggesting a ritual.

Perhaps the intention should concern professional opportunities, confidence in negotiations, personal development or overcoming a particular obstacle.

It is also possible that the situation requires practical changes rather than magical intervention.

For this reason, I begin with divinatory assessment, using Tarot or other methods to explore the request and select an appropriate form of work.

Sometimes a single ritual is sufficient. In other cases, I may recommend a sequence of workings, such as cleansing followed by a ritual intended to support a particular goal.

I don’t believe in prescribing the same ritual to everyone simply because their requests sound similar.

Does Magic Guarantee Results?

No. And I would be rather suspicious of anyone offering a 100% guarantee.

In my understanding, magic works with possibilities. It may help shift an energetic state, support a favourable development or increase the opportunities available to us.

However, there are always other factors involved, including circumstances beyond our control, the choices of other people and, most importantly, our own behaviour.

Imagine performing a ritual for career advancement and then refusing to apply for a promotion because you’re afraid of rejection.

Even if an opportunity appears, someone still has to take it.

This is an important part of my philosophy: magic can support your efforts, but you must contribute to the result yourself.

I also believe that not every desired outcome is necessarily beneficial. Sometimes we become so attached to obtaining something that we fail to consider whether it is actually good for us.

An appropriate preliminary assessment helps us examine that question before proceeding.

What About Black Magic?

I work exclusively with spiritual forces and practices that I consider benevolent and higher-frequency.

I don’t perform black magic or rituals intended to harm others, impose someone’s will or create destructive dependencies.

Nor do I tell clients that every financial problem, unsuccessful relationship or period of bad luck must have a supernatural explanation.

If you’ve had three disappointing relationships in a row, I would much rather examine your choices and relationship patterns before suggesting that somebody has cursed your love life.

Unfortunately, fear is a very effective sales technique. I prefer to work without it.

How Do We Know Whether a Ritual Worked?

I consider follow-up an essential part of professional ritual practice.

After completing the work, I provide a report explaining what was performed, along with photographs where appropriate and recommendations for any complementary personal practices.

Usually, after about a week, I carry out another divinatory assessment to examine the ritual’s outcome within the framework of my practice.

If the reading indicates that the ritual has not been successful, I repeat the work.

Of course, this type of assessment cannot scientifically establish that a supernatural influence has occurred. Nor does it guarantee that the desired external event will subsequently happen. I prefer to be transparent about that.

My approach is quite simple: I investigate the situation, select the methods I consider appropriate, explain the intended work and assess it afterwards.

I don’t promise that a candle will make you a millionaire. But if there is a meaningful opportunity to support positive change through ritual work, I am happy to explore it with you.
